We’ve had works from this period before in the retrospectives held after Gordon’s death but they are a rare find and it is a pleasure to see one of this quality in the gallery again

Frustratingly there is no signature nor handy provenance to give a clue to authorship

a hangover from the era of Victorian genre paintings but a very modern painting for 1889

as if they were made for film posters
