Both the French and German names mean 'New Castle'. During the middle of the 19th century, it became known as the center of watchmaking, and enjoyed a thriving economy. Hand painted miniature portraits were the predecessors of photographs. When there was no other way to record a likeness of someone, the miniatures were treasured and passed down in families.
